Green Moving Tips
Green moving simply means being away of our environment and using methods that are not harmful to the earth. There are many ways to improve on traditional moving methods that make a big difference in how we impact the environment.
• Try not to accumulate too much ‘stuff’ in the first place if you can help it. Moving fewer items means less gas used and it also usually means a quicker, cheaper move.
• One of hardest things about moving is deciding what to keep and what to toss. Once you’ve decided this, you can donate things to your local shelter, Value Village or Salvation Army.
• Consider selling unnecessary items online on craigslist or giving them a second life on sites like www.freecycle.org and www.vancouver.reuses.com.
• Rather than buying boxes, avoid unnecessary waste and consider renting moving boxes from environmentally responsible companies like www.frogbox.com.
• Avoid petroleum based bubble wrap by using old newspapers for non-fragile items, or even old sheets or towels as packing material.
• Look for environmentally-friendly cleaning products when moving out.
Basic Moving Tips
• Start packing well ahead of time.
• Avoid packing any single box too heavily. Safety first!
• Always pack heavier items at the bottom and lighter items at the top.
• Label boxes by location to identify where it should be placed upon arrival.
• Back up your computers before moving day.
• Dresser drawers should be emptied, taped and moved with the dresser.
• Art and pictures should be packed in cases or wrapped inside a large flattened box with both ends covered. We can also protect these with our moving blankets.
• Hat and shoe boxes should be consolidated into larger boxes.
• We have tools to disassemble and reassemble your furniture if necessary but you may want to disassemble large furniture ahead of time to reduce moving time.
